What can I change in a Padelio community after creating it?

Last updated 2026-05-10

TL;DR:

Most fields stay editable for the Owner: name, description, logo, cover, privacy (public/private), approval requirement, location. Settings are Owner-only — Admins moderate members but don't touch configuration. Communities don't support ownership transfer. Delete is permanent and cascades the community's event links (the linked events themselves stay intact on their owners' side).

Where to find settings

From the community page, open the settings entry:

  • Mobile — tap the settings (gear) icon in the top-right of the community detail screen.
  • Web — click Edit in the community header (it routes you to /community/<id>/edit).

The page is gated server-side: only the Owner can open it. Admins and Members see the public community view without an edit button.

What you can edit

Owner-controlled fields

  • Name and description.
  • Logo and cover image.
  • Location — city or place; Padelio re-geocodes for the map pin.
  • Privacy — isPublic toggle. Two states only: Public (listed in Browse) or Private (hidden, link-only).
  • Approval requirement — requiresApproval toggle. Independent of privacy. When on, new joiners enter the PENDING queue; when off, they're auto-approved.
  • Member limit — optional cap. The free tier enforces a hard 15-member ceiling; paid accounts can leave this unset (unlimited) or set a custom cap.

Admin actions (separate from settings)

Admins can't edit the settings above, but they can:

  • Approve or reject pending join requests.
  • Invite users directly by name search.
  • Block / unblock disruptive members.
  • Remove members from the community.

See communities/members-and-roles for the full role matrix.

Linked events, tournaments, leagues

Tournaments and leagues can be linked to the community so they appear in the community's events feed. The link is stored in the CommunityEvent join table — it's not part of the tournament or league itself.

  • Linking and unlinking are available to the Owner and Admins at any time.
  • Removing a link doesn't delete the tournament or league — only the visibility in this community's feed.
  • A single tournament or league can be linked to multiple communities simultaneously.

Deleting a community

From settings, scroll to Delete community and confirm. Effects:

  • The community is removed; it disappears from members' lists and from the Browse tab.
  • All CommunityEvent join rows cascade-delete, so any tournaments or leagues that were linked become unlinked. The linked tournaments and leagues themselves are not deleted — they stay alive for their owners.
  • Match history attached to participants stays on their profiles.
  • The community URL stops working.
  • Deletion is permanent and Owner-only. There's no soft-delete or undo.

Public / private + approval matrix

Privacy and the approval requirement are independent toggles. The combinations:

Public + auto-approvePublic + require approvalPrivate + auto-approvePrivate + require approval
Listed in Browse?✓✓✗✗
Anyone with link can…Join immediatelyRequest to join (PENDING)Join immediatelyRequest to join (PENDING)
Direct invites needed?NoNo (still queued)NoNo (still queued)

Switching public → private doesn't remove existing members. Switching require-approval on while joiners are pending leaves the queue intact.

FAQ

Can I switch a community from public to private after it's grown?
Yes — toggle `isPublic` from settings. Existing members stay; the Browse-tab listing disappears immediately. The **Require approval** toggle is independent of public/private; you can also change that any time.
Will deleting a community delete its linked tournaments and leagues?
The community's CommunityEvent join rows cascade-delete when the community is deleted, so the **link** to the community goes away — but the linked Tournament and League records themselves stay. Their owners keep them and any participant match history is preserved on player profiles.
Can I transfer ownership of a community?
No. There's no transferOwnership flow for communities today. Ownership stays with the original creator. If you need to hand a community over, the practical options are to promote a trusted member to Admin (they can run day-to-day moderation) or delete and recreate under the new owner.
Who can edit community settings?
Only the Owner. Admins can manage members (approve/reject join requests, invite, block) but the settings page itself uses an `ensureCommunityOwner` guard server-side, so Admins can't change name, description, cover, privacy, or approval. Members get a read-only view of the community.
