How do rounds and timers work in a Padelio tournament?

Last updated 2026-05-10

TL;DR:

Tap Start round to generate the next round and start its timer. Padelio records startedAt on the round so the countdown is the same on every device. Enter scores as games end. Tap Next round to lock the current round's scores and generate the next pairings. Repeat until the schedule is complete; final standings appear automatically.

How rounds are generated

Padelio generates rounds lazily — one round at a time. When you tap Start round, the next round's pairings and court assignments are computed based on:

  • The format you picked (see tournaments/formats).
  • The current participant list.
  • The number of courts you set up.
  • For Mexicano and the Pro formats, the live standings or bracket position after each round.

So at any moment, only the current round (and any past rounds) exist as records — there's no full pre-computed schedule sitting in the database. That's why a Mexicano can re-pair every round based on standings without rewriting earlier rounds.

The on-court timer

When you tap Start round, Padelio writes a startedAt timestamp on the round. Every client (mobile or web) computes the remaining time as startedAt + durationMinutes − now, so:

  • It keeps "running" if your phone screen sleeps or you switch apps.
  • All players on all devices see the same time remaining within a second or two.
  • Closing the app and reopening doesn't drift the clock.

When the timer hits zero, the round does not auto-end — players often need extra seconds to finish the current point. The owner taps Next round when they're ready to lock scores and generate the following round.

Editing a pending round's duration

If you want to change a round's duration, do it before that round starts. From the round list, tap a pending round and update its duration. The current (running) round and past rounds keep their original duration; only future pending rounds accept duration edits.

Entering scores

The scoring inputs depend on the variant you picked when choosing the format (Classic, Competitive, or Win-Lose):

  • Competitive — set/games scoring; you enter games won per pair per set. Best when each round is a "first to N games" or a short set.
  • Classic — cumulative-points scoring; you enter total points per pair across the round. Best for Americano-style "first to N points" rounds.
  • Win-Lose — binary outcome only; you record which pair won the round. Quickest entry, used for casual King-of-the-Court-style nights.

The variant is fixed at tournament creation and applies uniformly to every round.

Score editing window

Scores in the current round are editable until you generate the next round. As soon as Next round is tapped, the previous round's scores lock — that snapshot is what feeds into standings and (for Mexicano) the next round's pairings.

Once the tournament is marked FINISHED, the entire score history is immutable.

Finishing the tournament

There's no manual "End tournament" button — the tournament moves to FINISHED automatically once the last scheduled round closes. From there:

  • Final standings appear on the results page.
  • The tournament moves to Completed in your history.
  • The share link continues to work indefinitely.

You can re-open and view the tournament anytime; see tournaments/score-and-results for sharing.

FAQ

Can I change the round duration after the tournament starts?
Yes, but only on a round that hasn't started yet. From the round list, tap a pending round and edit its duration. The current (running) round and any past rounds keep the duration they started with.
Does the timer have to run?
No. The on-screen countdown is informational — it doesn't auto-end the round when it hits zero. Players often need a few extra seconds to finish the current point. End the round manually whenever scores are in.
What happens to the timer if my phone goes to sleep?
Nothing — the timer is anchored to a server-side `startedAt` timestamp. The countdown is recomputed on every device from that timestamp, so closing the app, switching devices, or even crossing time zones doesn't drift the clock.
How do I edit a score after entering it?
You can edit any score in the **current round** until the next round is generated. After the next round starts, scores from earlier rounds are locked. Once the tournament is FINISHED, no scores can be edited.
