How do divisions work in a Padelio league?
Last updated 2026-05-18
Divisions split a season into ranked tiers — Premier, Division 2, Division 3, and so on. Each division has its own roster, schedule, and standings. Between seasons, the top N players in each division are auto-promoted and the bottom N are auto-relegated. Divisions are set per season, opt-in, and require a Pro or Crew plan.
What divisions are
A division is a tier within a season. Single-tier seasons (the default) behave exactly as they always have — one roster, one schedule, one standings table. Multi-division seasons let you group players of similar level together:
- Each division has its own roster — players are assigned to one division per season.
- Each division has its own schedule — matches never cross divisions.
- Each division has its own standings — separate leaderboards per tier.
- Each division has cosmetic fields you control: name, description, colour, and logo.
Divisions are per-season, not per-league. A league can run a single-tier Season 1 and then split into three divisions for Season 2.
Enabling divisions
You have two paths:
Path A — when creating a new season
In the Create season dialog (web) or New season modal (mobile), toggle Enable divisions. The form expands to:
- Number of divisions — 2 to 10. Defaults to 3 (Premier, Division 2, Division 3).
- Division names — rename inline.
- Promote (top N) and Relegate (bottom N) — 0–5 each, defaults to 2. Controls the auto-shuffle when this season finishes and the next season starts.
If the previous season had divisions, Padelio pre-fills the same count and names so you don't have to retype them.
Path B — enabling on an existing DRAFT season
If you already created a single-tier season but want to split it, open the season and tap Enable divisions. Keep two things in mind:
- The season must still be in DRAFT.
- If you've already generated a schedule, enabling divisions deletes it — you'll regenerate per division. Padelio shows a confirmation warning first.
After enabling, every participant becomes Unassigned and the owner places them into divisions from the Members tab.
Assigning players to divisions
From the Members tab, use Assign to division… next to each participant. Players who self-register through the join code land as Unassigned, and the owner approves them with Approve into division… which picks the tier in the same step.
A banner at the top of the tab counts how many players still need a division.
You can move a player between divisions while the season is in DRAFT. Once the season is ACTIVE, division moves are locked — players stay in the tier they started in.
Schedules per division
Each division has its own schedule. From the Schedule tab, switch divisions using the picker at the top, then generate or edit that division's matchdays as normal. The season can't be published into ACTIVE until every division has a schedule — Padelio surfaces a warning listing the empty divisions if you try.
Standings per division
The Standings tab also has a division switcher. Each division's table is independent — points, wins, draws, losses, and tie-breakers are scoped to matches played within that division. There is no cross-division "overall" leaderboard.
Promotion and relegation between seasons
When you create the next season from a league with a divisioned predecessor, Padelio runs an automatic promotion/relegation pass:
- The top N players in each division (defined by Promote (top N) on the previous season) move up one tier.
- The bottom N players in each division move down one tier.
- Everyone else stays in their current tier.
- Returning players from divisions that no longer exist (e.g. you reduced the count) are placed in the closest remaining tier and flagged Auto-demoted — you can override by moving them.
- New members (who weren't in the previous season) appear in a New members panel for you to drop into a starting tier manually.
The create-season form previews the placement before you confirm. If you change the division count between seasons, auto-placement is disabled and everyone needs manual assignment.
Editing divisions after creation
The Divisions tab on the league page is the management surface:
- Rename a division.
- Recolour it (used for the division pill across the league).
- Add a logo (image URL).
- Add a division — DRAFT only.
- Delete a division — DRAFT only, and only if no matches have been played in it. The default auto-division (single-tier seasons) can't be deleted.
Non-managers see the same tab as a read-only summary so they can check which tier they're in.
Limits and gating
- Min 2, max 10 divisions per season.
- Pro / Crew gated. Enabling divisions requires the league owner (or the hosting crew) to have an active Pro or Crew subscription. Single-tier seasons are unaffected.
- One division per participant per season.
- Division moves locked once ACTIVE — pick carefully before publishing.

FAQ
- Are divisions free?
- No. Divisions are a Pro feature — the league owner (or the hosting crew) needs a Pro or Crew subscription. Single-tier seasons stay free; the gate only applies once you enable multiple divisions.
- How many divisions can I have?
- Between 2 and 10 per season. The create-season form pre-fills three (Premier, Division 2, Division 3) but you can resize the list before saving.
- Can I add a division mid-season?
- New divisions can only be added while the season is in DRAFT. Once the season is ACTIVE, the division list is locked — though you can still rename, recolour, or change the logo of an existing division.
- Can a player be in two divisions?
- No. Each participant belongs to exactly one division per season, the same way each player belongs to one team per season.
- What happens if I turn divisions off again?
- Disabling a divisioned season merges everyone back into a single default tier — the promotion/relegation flow won't run for that season's transition. Re-enable divisions before starting the next season if you want the auto-placement back.
