How do seasons and statuses work in a Padelio league?

Last updated 2026-09-16

TL;DR:

A league has seasons. Each season moves through DRAFT → ACTIVE → FINISHED (or CANCELLED if you close it early; ARCHIVED if you hide it from the active list). Editing is most flexible in DRAFT. Active seasons accept match results. Finished and cancelled seasons are read-only and surface final standings. Start a new season any time from the league page; the previous season's roster carries over automatically.

The five statuses

The actual status enum has five values: DRAFT, ACTIVE, FINISHED, CANCELLED, ARCHIVED.

DRAFT

The default for new seasons. Roster, schedule, and scoring rules are all editable. No matches have results yet. Use this phase to:

  • Add or remove teams / players (removal is DRAFT-only — once you publish, you can swap players in a team but not remove the team itself).
  • Set the season's date range, name, and description.
  • Configure scoring rules and round structure — including whether the table runs on Match points (win / draw / loss), Set points (a point for every set won, counted even in a lost match), or both stacked. See leagues/manage-settings.

While in DRAFT, the season is visible to the league's organizers and to the participants you've added; it's still being prepared and matches haven't started.

ACTIVE

Once you publish a DRAFT season, it becomes ACTIVE:

  • Match results can be entered.
  • Standings update live.
  • The schedule can be advanced one matchday at a time.
  • Most settings stay editable: name, dates, individual player swaps. The four points fields (win, draw, loss, per set won) are locked — the standings are already built on them. The remaining scoring rules (game-differential, organizer-only-scoring) stay editable but are MANAGER+ only.

A league has at most maxConcurrentSeasons non-finished seasons at a time (default 1, raisable on Pro plans).

If the season has divisions enabled, every division needs a schedule before you can move to ACTIVE — Padelio surfaces a warning listing the empty divisions if you try to publish early. Once ACTIVE, division moves are locked. See leagues/divisions.

FINISHED

When you close an active season — or when the schedule completes — Padelio:

  1. Computes final standings.
  2. Marks the season FINISHED.
  3. Makes the roster, scores, and standings read-only.

You can still rename a FINISHED season's cosmetic fields if needed, but standings and scores are immutable.

CANCELLED

If play stops abruptly and you don't want bogus final standings, use Cancel season from the season's settings (Pro-gated — same gating as the rest of the lifecycle controls). The season transitions DRAFT or ACTIVE → CANCELLED. Match results that were entered are kept, but no final standings are computed.

ARCHIVED

A bookkeeping status — used to hide an old season from the league's active list while keeping its records. Archived seasons are read-only and stay accessible via direct link.

Starting the next season

From the league page, tap New season. Padelio:

  • Creates a new DRAFT season.
  • Automatically copies all RESERVED (confirmed) participants from the most recent season into the new one — no opt-in prompt.
  • Resets standings — each season has its own standings tied to the season ID.
  • Starts from Padelio's default scoring — 3 / 1 / 0 match points and no set points — rather than copying the previous season's. If the last season ran on Set points, switch them back on in the new DRAFT before publishing.
  • Runs auto promotion/relegation if the previous season had divisions: the top N of each division move up a tier and the bottom N move down, based on the Promote (top N) and Relegate (bottom N) counts you set. New members are queued for manual placement. See leagues/divisions.

Adjust the roster as needed (add new joiners, remove people who aren't returning) before publishing. The new season starts in DRAFT so you have time to make changes.

Cancelling a season

From the season's settings, choose Cancel season. Active or draft seasons go to CANCELLED instead of FINISHED — match results that have been entered are kept on the matches themselves, but no final standings are computed and no MVP/awards are surfaced. Use this if play stops abruptly and you don't want a misleading "final" result.

Reopening a finished season

Not supported. Once a season is FINISHED or CANCELLED, it stays that way to keep history reliable. There's no reopenSeason mutation — if a single match score needs correcting after the season has closed, contact support; for routine play, treat the closing transition as final.

FAQ

Can I run two seasons in parallel?
By default each league has at most one active or draft season at a time (`maxConcurrentSeasons` defaults to 1). Pro plans can raise this — for example to overlap a wrap-up of season N with the draft of season N+1. The default is one to keep standings clean.
Do players carry over between seasons?
Yes — automatically. When you create the next season, Padelio copies the previous season's confirmed (RESERVED) participants into the new DRAFT roster. You can still adjust before publishing — add new players, remove ones who aren't returning. There's no "Yes/No" prompt; carry-over is always on.
Can I rename a season after it's published?
Yes. Season name, description, and dates stay editable in DRAFT and ACTIVE for crew Staff+ (or the league owner). Sensitive scoring fields (points-per-win, draw, loss, points-per-set-won, game-differential, organizer-only-scoring) require crew Manager+ to change — and the four points fields only while the season is still a DRAFT.
Can I switch a season to set points after it has started?
No. The four points fields (win, draw, loss, per set won) lock the moment the season goes ACTIVE, because its table is already built on them. Turn **Set points** on while the season is still a DRAFT — from **Settings → Seasons → Scoring** on the web, or the **Scoring** button on the season row in **Manage league** on mobile — or carry the change into the next season. See [leagues/manage-settings](/docs/leagues/manage-settings).
