Fixed teams vs dynamic teams in a Padelio league — which should I pick?
Last updated 2026-07-15
Fixed teams: duos register together and play together for the whole season — standings are per team. Dynamic teams: each match round re-pairs players, like a recurring Americano — standings are per player. The choice is made per season; a league can switch formats between seasons.
This choice applies to doubles leagues only. If you picked Singles when you created the league, there's no format to choose — every match is 1v1 and the picker doesn't appear. See leagues/singles.
There's a third doubles option: Ladder. It replaces the season-long table with a ranked pyramid — players are regrouped by rank every cycle and move up or down a group. If neither format below fits a mixed-level club, see leagues/ladder.
At a glance
| Aspect | Fixed teams | Dynamic teams |
|---|---|---|
| Pairing | Set once per season | Re-paired each match round |
| Standings unit | Per team | Per player |
| Best for | Clubs, competitive | Social, fluctuating attendance |
| No-show handling | Team is short for the round | Easy — re-pair around the absence |
| Roster changes | Player swaps allowed at any time | Add players any time; can't remove if played |
Fixed teams
Duos register together at the start of the season and play together for every match. Each team has a name and a paired set of two players. Standings show team rankings — wins, draws, losses, points — across the season.
Why pick it:
- Clubs and serious leagues: rivalries, partnerships, identity.
- Easy to track over multiple seasons: same teams come back, see their improvement.
- Standings feel real because the same team's performance compounds.
Watch out for:
- A no-show breaks the team for that night. Padelio doesn't carry a "substitute slot" — if you need to swap in a different player, the owner replaces one of the two team members from the season's roster (no per-team substitute slot exists).
- Players who can't commit to a season-long partnership won't fit. Use Dynamic teams instead, or run a tournament for one-off play.
Dynamic teams
There are no permanent teams. Each match round re-pairs players who are present (the same idea as an Americano-style tournament). Standings are per player — points, wins, partner variety — accumulated across the season.
Why pick it:
- Casual leagues where the same group plays every week but attendance varies.
- Mixed-level groups: weekly re-pairing balances out luck of the draw across the season.
- Avoids the "but I want to play with..." politics of fixed pairs.
Watch out for:
- Standings can feel less "league-like" because there's no team identity.
- If your group always has the same eight people, this is great. If a different group shows up every week, partner variety thins.
How to decide
- Two players want to play a season together as a duo? Fixed teams.
- Group of 8–12 friends, attendance varies, want a casual ladder? Dynamic teams.
- Club with 30+ members, formal structure? Fixed teams.
- Office padel ladder? Either works; default to Dynamic teams for flexibility.

- Already created and need to add participants? leagues/add-teams.
FAQ
- Can I switch from fixed to dynamic mid-season?
- No. Once a season is created, its format is locked. But the format is set per **season**, not per league — so you can finish the current season and start the next one with the other format. A single league can mix Fixed and Dynamic seasons over time.
- Can I have both formats in the same group?
- Yes — create two leagues, one with a Fixed season and one with a Dynamic season, and run them side-by-side. Some clubs do exactly this so members can choose. You can also alternate formats across the same league's seasons if you'd rather not maintain two leagues.
- Which format is more popular?
- Fixed teams is the traditional padel-club default. Dynamic teams is closer in spirit to a recurring social Americano and works well for friend groups where attendance varies week to week.
